Subject must serve at least 15 of those years
RICHMOND, Va. — A Charlottesville man has been sentenced to 15 years of “active incarceration” for crimes related to child pornography.
In November 2022, Avery Wood began soliciting a girl, whom he believed to be a 13-years-old, for sexually explicit material. The “girl” was actually a detective with the Front Royal Police Department, who was conducting an undercover operation.

After Wood sent child pornography videos and explicit images of himself to the detective, the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Computer Crimes Section was contacted.
During the investigation, Wood traveled to a hotel in Front Royal to meet with the “girl,” where he was subsequently arrested.
Wood, 54, admitted to sending explicit images of himself and proposing sexual acts. A forensic examination of his cell phone verified the chats and child pornography files.
According to a February 21, 2025 media release from Attorney General Jason Miyares, Wood was sentenced to 40 years, 15 years of which is active, for Use of a Communications System to Solicit a Minor and Distribution of Child Pornography in Warren County Circuit Court.
Upon his release, Wood will be placed on supervised probation and must register as a sex offender.
He has been ordered not to have contact with minors, and he is not allowed Internet access unless approved and monitored by his probation officer.
