LURAY, Va. — The Hawksbill Greenway Foundation, in partnership with the Luray Parks & Recreation Department, recently held its third annual “Clean and Green” cleanup effort.
The event, held from April 22 through April 30, 2025, celebrated Earth Day while supporting the Shenandoah and Potomac Riverkeepers’ “Trash Free Shenandoah” initiative.
Together, local volunteers and “parks and rec” team members removed tires, trash, and debris from Greenway trees and Hawksbill Creek. They also cleared weeds and litter from Ralph Dean Recreation Park.
While the amount of trash collected this year was considerably less than in previous years, litter continues to be a concern in the county. Just last month, Sheriff Chad Cubbage issued a statement reminding residents about penalties for dumping trash or littering.
The Hawksbill Greenway is a 10-foot-wide walking and biking trail, approximately two miles long. According to the Greenway website, “This multi-use path meanders along scenic Hawksbill Creek through the center of historic Luray. It combines a lush habitat for birds, butterflies, trout and other wildlife with urban amenities.”
Hawksbill Creek is a main tributary of the Shenandoah River.
