State Police Pursuit, Multi-Vehicle Crash Shut Down I-81

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) initiated a pursuit after a vehicle failed to stop along Interstate 81 on Monday. The chase ended in a crash involving multiple vehicles.

At approximately 11:15 a.m. on February 9, 2026, troopers attempted to stop a vehicle near the 241-mile marker (Mt. Crawford/Bridgewater).

The driver refused to stop, and a pursuit continued northbound to the 244-mile marker (near Harrisonburg).

According to a VSP media release, the suspect’s vehicle attempted to split traffic and then struck a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck before overturning and coming to rest in the median.

The driver was treated for injuries and taken into custody. No additional injuries were reported.

The incident caused significant traffic delays as police closed all lanes of Interstate 81 in both directions.

Traffic diverted from the interstate led to heavy congestion in Harrisonburg.

The incident remains under investigation.
